Report from "Danxia Cup" the Third National Geography Olympiad of Middle School in China

During 11 ~15 November, 2009, “The Third National Geography Olympiad of middle school in China cum the Eighth International Geographic Olympiad Competition Trials” had held in Danxia Mountain World Geopark, which located in Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, China. The contest was sponsored by the Olympiad Working Group from Geographical Society of China, organized by Center of Geography and Education for Sustainable Development from Beijing Normal University, Danxia Mountain Scenic Area Management Committee gave support.

From Guangdong, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Beijing, Tianjin, Hubei, Hunan, Anhui, Fujian, Hebei, Gansu and other 12 provinces (municipalities), 136 secondary school students formed 34 teams participated in the contest.

The Types of contest Question in accordance with the International Geographical Olympiad, divided into three parts, which are landscape interpretation, comprehensive questions and fieldwork. On the morning of 14 Nov, 2009, students experience a three-hour written examination in multi-media classrooms of RENHUA secondary school. The morning competition has two parts, both written tests, one is landscape interpretation, and the anther is integrated title (including English and some other title). On the afternoon of 14 Nov, 2009, there conducted a field investigation. That night, we invited 16 teachers cooperation with staff from China Olympiad working group of GSC, they work very hard and at 3am of 15 Nov, 2009 completed the Marking, scoring, awards of contest. On the morning of 15 Nov 2009, all the students and the instructor visited main attractions in the Geo-park.

The Awards ceremony held on afternoon 15 Nov, 2009, the meeting chaired by Professor Wang Min who is the leader of Olympiad working group of GSC. He announced the winner lists, Followed Zhang GuoYou Secretary-General from GSC, Hou Rong Fung Deputy Director from Geo-park, Prof. Wang Min From School of geography, Beijing Normal University, Professor Wang Min award winners respectively, and finally, Zhang GuoYou Secretary-General made concluding remarks, Hou Rong Fung Deputy Director have also done a speech.

There were 20 students received the first prize(list of winners), Dai Miaoshu from Donghua high school in Dongguan City, Liu zhuoying from South China Normal University affiliated high school, Weng ShuYi from Nanjing Foreign Language School, Cong Hao Xinhua school in Yangzhou city received the top four, won on behalf of China (Beijing) to participate in the Eighth International Geographic Olympiad qualifications. Wuhan Foreign Languages School, Guangrao School(2), Nanjing Foreign Language School, the Guangdong Olympic School won first prize in groups; Shenzhen Foreign Languages School, Donghua High School in Dongguan, South China Normal University affiliated high school, Shandong Experimental High School, ZhongYuan Secondary School in Guangdong, Xianshuigu school in Tianjin shared second group prize. Huangjin, Cheng Yuanhui, Wanggang, Fu Luijun, Wu Yule, Lv Hongbing, Ji Zhijuan, Lijiang, Fengdan, Zhao Wunxia, Chen Jingqiu, Chen Zilun, these teachers from the above School won the Award for excellent instructor.

"China's National Geographic" magazine, "naturalist" magazine, "secondary school geography teaching reference," "Geography Education", "Earth" and other journals of the media to watch the contest and be a positive report.
